Healing through the use of hypnosis happens on a physical and mental level in many different ways. One major aspect of healing takes place through the use of positive suggestions in a hypnotic state of mind. This is based on the premise that positive thinking creates health. What you think about, or concentrate on, you bring about through both positivism or negativism.
 
Take a moment and think of something that really bothers you. You feel yourself getting angry or frustated, you may feel your heart beating faster and your adrenalin begins to flow. Now visualize a place that represents peace and calm. You will find your heartbeat slows down and you start feeling better.  You may take a deep breath as the muscles in your body relax and you realize you were not breathing fully when you were angry. This is how and why hypnosis works. Our mind and body are connected. What is happeing in one is causing an effect in the other; and vice versa.
 
All physical illnesses fit in one of two categories. It is either all physical or it is psychosomatic, which stems from psychological or emotional causes. Many doctors now claim that over half of all illnesses fall in the category of psychosomatic. However, the power of our thoughts and our focus on either positive or negative can actually have a direct effect on both the physical and the psychosomatic.
 
Most doctors agree that a person's mental state affects their physical health. Hypnosis is used sometimes in clinical settings not only for anesthesia but more often to help treat patients with fear and anxiety. It has been proven that it takes longer for people to heal that have depression, fear, anxiety or other negative emotions. It was in 1958 that the American Medical Association approved the use of hypnosis for the relief of pain during surgery as well as during child birth.
 
Biofeedback machines have scientifically proven that thinking or visualizing can change bodily functions. Tremendous research in the last several decades has proven that thinking, imagining and feeling are the control mechanism for the immune system, the autonomic nervous system, and hypothalamus. If you are constantly under high levels of stress, you are producing higher levels of stress hormones that are effecting your body in some way. Since illness generally involves the immune system, it is representative of the total body function. Psycho immunological studies have shown that lymphocytes and antibodies are affected by our basic attitudes of positivism or negativism. Regularly engaging in deep relaxation and positive affirmations is one way to get immediate results in the regulation of your immune system.
